My child was born prematurely; should I put in their actual birth date or their adjusted birth date?
Depending on what your doctor or Maternal and Child Health nurse recommend, a formal assessment for autism may be conducted by either a specialist child practitioner or a multidisciplinary team.
Specialist Child Practitioner – Specialist child practitioners who can provide a formal assessment for autism include Paediatricians, Psychologists and Psychiatrists. They will often use reports obtained by you and others who know your child, along with their observations of your child, to determine whether a diagnosis of autism is appropriate.
Multidisciplinary team – This team usually includes a doctor (paediatrician or a child psychiatrist), a psychologist, a speech pathologist, and/or occupational therapist. Each specialist will gather information from you, as well as conduct specific assessments with your child, to determine whether a diagnosis of autism is appropriate.
